The coastline, both that of Amalfi and Sorrento, are more varied than ever: each centre has its own historic-cultural characteristics, an aspect that distinguishes them or makes them fascinating. Amalfi is the main coastal city and was once, one of Italy’s Maritime Republics along with Genoa, Pisa and Venice. With its Cathedral (which is a blend of Lombard and Norman styles with cloisters in Saracen style), the Chiesa di Santa Maria, the Chiostro del Paradiso, the Valle dei Mulini, the Sant’Andrea Fountain, and the Arsenale della Repubblica make this one of the foremost locations to admire the imprint of Roman and barbarian influences. It is one of the real jewels of the Amalfi coast.
